History

The Danby Estate is owned by the Dawnay family, whose home is located at Wykeham Abbey near Scarborough. The head of the family, the 12th Viscount Downe, is the latest successor to enjoy a long period of ownership which commenced in 1656 when the Castle, tenanted farms, moorland and Lord of the Manor was purchased from the Trustees of the Earl Danvers.

Previously the Estate had been owned by notable families such as Robert de Brus, the Latimers and Nevilles, and Catherine Parr (Henry VIII’s sixth Queen) who was previously married to a Latimer but reputedly rarely visited Danby Castle. She is said to have developed a dislike of the North!
